So as much as tourists pass me on a daily basis sticking out like sore thumbs with their absolutely no sense of direction, dumbfounded by every store front, I always forget that they’re not always staying at the Fountain Bleu or the Lowes, sometimes they are staying at a boutique hotel or even a hostel. After an endless amount of people bugging me about going, raving and telling me how much I’d love it, I finally went to the The Freehand Hostel’s backyard to checkout their bar spot: The Broken Shaker. Boy, does the name fit perfectly because they have broken the cocktail rules and started their own game. The beer garden-like spot is covered with strung lights, tons of greenery, and fun and rustic pieces of patio furniture and tables-
But back to the drinks: the bar area is dimly lit made of all dark wood with clear bottles framing the back lighting it up as a beautiful backdrop. But just wait for it, the sensuality of the dark room doesnt stop there becasue theyre they’re incredibly creative and that’s what sets them apart: the menu handed to you when you get there won’t be the same as you got last time, their amazing signature cocktail menu changes every week. They’ve turned drinking into an art. Not to offend my own work, but your regular cosmopolitan on Collins would be disgraced here, it’s now a Banana Bread Rum. See something you don’t like? Well tell them. Start with your base of liquor and do you have something for mango? Or jalapeños? You’ve got your own barista here, take advantage of it and let your taste buds fall drunk in love.
