So if you asked me where I wanted to eat 7 nights a week, I’d tell you I want sushi and the least to say that I am a sushi snob so I probably wouldn’t be your cheapest date. Not anything will cure the craving, forget publix or Iron Sushi, or any place that is a chain but my favorite little place just happens to be a whole in the wall right off of 71st on Miami Beach. There isn’t a big sign, or any sign at all actually, normally just a bunch of people hanging outside the storefront and maybe you can get a little peek at the hanging lanterns in the window.
If you didn’t know already, Katanas, is probably one of the beaches best kept secrets in which it is one of the most generously priced places to grab sushi in Miami. Oh did I mention it’s waterfront? Katatanas is locally notorious for one of the only restaurants in Dade to have a river running through the middle with tiny wooden boats holding plates of sushi. The restaurant seats under 30 people with about four tables seating four, and the rest all bar-side. The dimly lit and simplistic restaurant is the best place for a quiet and intimate date but be ready to wait in line, because so is everyone else already is. The “u” shaped river has the sushi chef in the middle preparing rolls to set out as diners enjoy their riverfront experience.
Katanas has all your traditional rolls paddling down from California, spicy tuna, dragon and even sashimi. Don’t see something to satisfy your craving? You can request your favorite roll or the waiter can bring you a menu to take your order for appetizers, rice dishes, tempuras, soup, dessert, sakes and many other tradition selections. It’s cozy and intimate vibe is what gives it its unique experience that no one understands until you sit by the riverfront, so before I spoil too much I’ll just let you experience it on your own. But don’t forget to count your different colored plates before you go, it’s how your tab is calculated.
